Crystal Crescent Beach

We are always trying to check out new places on the coast of Nova Scotia to explore..There are more places to see than we have time.  The other office couple, Elder and Sister Majeran, from Rocky Mountain House in Alberta, invited Elder Boyle and I to go visit Crystal Crescent Beach with them. They had discovered it a week earlier and said it was beautiful with great vistas and an easy 3 km hike to a place where the waves hit the rocks on the shore and spit up into the air. We decided to go with them on the first sunny week-end that we had.  It was sunny in Dartmouth when we left, but as soon as we crossed the bridge into Halifax we ran into cloudy skies.  It was still a nice day without wind, but unfortunately the visibility was really limited.  The hike wasn't too bad either.  We walked past 2 beaches before getting to the rocks where the waves hit.

Sister Majeran
She was quite disappointed that the fog had rolled in because they had come before on a clear day and you could see other islands and a beautiful view out into the ocean. She wanted us to be able to see that too.

For some reason my foot had started hurting earlier in the day.  I didn't think too much about it at first.  It felt like a cramp on the top of my foot and I thought I could just walk it off.  I made it to the cliffs and sat down to view the scenery while the others went just a little farther on the rocks.  The rocks were big flat wide rocks like those at Peggy's Cove.  We stayed for about a half hour.  Sister Majeran was so disappointed that the skies were cloudy and we didn't have the same view that they had seen when they came before but it was still beautiful and peaceful.  We really like the ocean.  When it was time to stand up and start to walk back I could hardly walk.  My ankle was killing me and it got worse with every step.  I was really leaning on Cary for support and really hating the fact that we had 3 km to walk out..  Before we got all the way out I was leaning on Cary and Elder Majeran both for support and really wishing that the car was parked closer than it was.  We finally made it to the car and I was fine until we got home and I got out to go in the apartment building and I couldn't even put weight on my foot.  I had to hop all the way to the door.
The next day Cary took me to the same day clinic in Sackville.  I had stayed awake much of the night worrying that something was really wrong with my foot but hoping that it wasn't going to require surgery or months in a cast.  When the Doctor in the clinic heard where the pain was he said immediately that it was shin splints.  I said that couldn't be right because it was my ankle that hurts and I can't even put wait on it.  He said it was still shin splints and it was probably going to take a long time before I can do long walks.  All I can do for them is ice and Ibuprophen.  We picked up some crutches from the office and I spent the next couple of days hopping around with crutches and scooting around in my office chair.  The next day I already had an appointment with Dr. Fox to get some prescriptions refilled so I talked to him about my foot and he confirmed the diagnosis. He said it would be weeks before things healed up.  Within about a week I was able to put some weight on my foot still using the crutches.  I tried just using one crutch but after a few days my foot was worse so I am back to 2 crutches.  And that is still the way it is and it has been 5 weeks.  I had NO idea that shin splints were in any way so painful.  I pray everyday that they will heal quickly.

Guess what!! After 6 weeks I went back to Dr. Fox to discuss the fact that I still couldn't put my total weight on my foot and I was still using crutches.  He said that I should have a bone scan and then asked me if I had been to x-ray.  I said no.  Both doctors just told me that I had shin splints and no one told me to get it x-rayed.  So Dr. Fox send me to get an x-ray and it showed that my tibia was fractured.  The radiologist told me that it was healing and sent me to the ER to see a doctor.  They looked at the x-rays and got me set up with a boot and an appointment with an Orthopedic Doctor this Friday. At least now I understand why it has been so painful.
